Oamaru Bay Original

Oamaru Bay features typical signifiers of a New Zealand summer - the dinghy, picnic table and pohutukawa. Naples yellow underpainting creates a sense of bright light, evoking the traditional experience of a summer’s day.

Pops of peach, magentas and brick reds accentuate the dappled light from the pohutukawa.

However, this painting also questions how much we really know about the places we visit. The baches are hidden behind overgrown trees, the picnic table is weathered and the dinghy has been abandoned, suggesting our holiday memories may be a construct of the ‘ideal’. 

Painted with oil paint & oil pastels on oil paper. This is the original artwork, measuring 50 x 50 cm (+ frame & mat is 62cm). Artwork comes framed in a crisp white frame with mat board.
